Last weekend I DJ’d in Hull, London, Blackburn, Manchester and Liverpool and had an absolute ball as the sun shone.
My first gig was for Mish Mash at The Old School House in Hull on Thursday 14th April. It was a great way to ease myself into the long weekend on the road and I randomly met Robert Plant who was staying in my hotel.
The following day Friday 15th, I got the train to London for the FAC51 The Haçienda event at Tobacco Dock where I DJ’d alongside Mike Pickering in the Nude Night arena. This incredible venue also hosted The Haçienda’s Flesh and Hot nights with a massive line-up of DJs and performers including Jon Da Silva, DJ Paulette, Masters At Work, Inner City, Tom Wainwright, Derrick Carter, Carl Craig, Juan Atkins and more. Mike and I had an absolutely superb time DJing together too.
Straight after the Tobacco Dock party I headed across the road to DJ at the Haçienda Afterparty alongside Carl Craig, Juan Atkins and Derrick Carter. This was possibly my favourite gig of the weekend in another great venue that I really liked
On Saturday evening 16th April, I was back up North and headed over to Blackburn to play for the Symposium Carnival at Calypso. This outdoor event had a very young crowd and although I was pretty tired, their energy and enthusiasm rubbed off on me while I played.
The following afternoon Sunday 17th April, I was in Manchester for the launch of Better Sundays at Escape To Freight Island. The sun was out and Sally Rodgers and Don Letts had left me with a wonderful vibe which I continued with an eclectic selection of grooves before handing over to Luke Unabomber and Greg Wilson.
Finally, I headed down the M62 to Liverpool to DJ for Back To My Roots at Garlands, a club that has been closed for a few years and that I haven’t played at since the 1990s. It was a pretty full-on end to a huge weekend where I played an really eclectic selection of house, disco, funk and soul grooves to real mix of people. Thank you for letting me continue to do what I do after almost four decades on the decks.
