Last Saturday felt distinctly like it was the 1990s because I DJ’d in Manchester and Blackburn, just like I used to do a lot back in the day. It was quite common to finish at The Haçienda before jumping in a car and racing up to Blackburn to play at a warehouse rave. Not quite the same at the weekend, but not too far off either.
First up I DJ’d at the Pen & Pencil in Manchester’s Northern Quarter for the Kiss 102 25th Anniversary party. This small, intimate venue was the perfect spot for meeting up with old friends and former colleagues to reminisce and play some of the tunes that I used to programme on my daily weekday and weekend shows on Kiss 102. It was great hanging out with former colleagues David Dunne, Grainne Landowski, Nemone Metaxas, Paul Webster, Simon Ritchie, Mark Ovenden, Quentin Nield, Nev Johnson, Mike Gray, Guy Hornsby, Kath McDermott, Mark Hogg, Andy Barker, James Blessing and more. There was a real mix of presenters, programmers, technicians, engineers, management, directors and others who were all part of this groundbreaking and cutting edge radio station. Even our old accountant Roz Pederson was there! Great to see that we’re all still really busy and doing well in our respective fields over two decades later.
Naturally I decided to play some of the tunes that I used to drop on air but not the obvious ones. I really enjoyed my set and it went right off too. Listen to my DJ set below (subscription required).

As soon as I finished my set I reluctantly had to say my goodbyes and jump into my car and head up to Blackburn for the adidas Spezial “Live The Scream” event with Primal Scream at the wonderful King George’s Hall. The place was, understandably, packed to the rafters and I arrived in time to see Primal Scream play and to get the crowd going. I had to follow them and decided to kick off with some acid house as a nod to Blackburn’s rave heritage. It was immense fun playing on the stage to an audience that was right up for it. Then again, I always knew they would be. You can listen to my DJ set from Blackburn below (subscription required).
